Updates

Service Pack 1

The Service Pack 1 (SP1) was a general update to Windows Vista received on 4 February 2008, and deals with the problems faced in the initial version. SP1 contains changes focused on addressing specific issues of performance, reliability and security, support for new types of hardware, better memory management, address the problem with energy in batteries for laptops, in addition to adding support for several emerging standards hardware and software, including support for highlighting the exFAT file system, 802.11n wireless networking, IPv6 VPN connections, and the protocol SSTP (Secure Socket Tuneling). The SP1 kernel (6001) is consistent with the release version of Windows Server 2008.

Two areas that have seen major changes in SP1 are due to opinions of developers and software vendors. One of these is desktop search, users can change the default search program provided by any third party instead of Windows desktop search that includes Windows Vista, in addition to the search programs may be fully coupled with the services provided by operating system. These changes are partly due to complaints the company Google, whose Google Desktop Search application was overshadowed by the native search system in Vista.
An update to DirectX 10, named DirectX 10.1, makes mandatory several features previously optional in Direct3D 10 hardware devices.

The active support for SP1 patches 'hot' technology designed to optimize the loading time and decrease the restarts. Its operation allows Windows components to be updated (or "patched") while being used by a running process. Updated packages 'hot' are installed using the same methods as traditional update packages, and do not require a reboot.
